Thursday Thoughts - Businesses and Organizations as Father Figures

Figurative Fathers
by Rachel Hoyt

Instigating Irving
Says and does crazy things,
Then, like the USDA,
Spellz thah issyou away.

With a pop like Pushy Pete,
The answer is never, "Retreat!"
They think like the Pentagon -
A power house can't be a pawn.

Guys like Generous Jerry,
Have finances quite scary,
Like Amazon no income,
Can cover their family's fun.

Egalitarian Earl,
Is a political pearl,
A WTO pal who,
Fights for fair in all we do.

This week I saw parenting styles in the news
and too many good stories from which to choose:

Amazon spending like a fool,
and the WTO scolds the USA, to name a few.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Torpor

Torpor
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Michael Elliott via freedigitalphotos.net

To indulge in torpor
would not be a bore
or feel like a chore
even if the floor
held you in torpor.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Splattered

Something Splattered
by Rachel Hoyt

Both solid and scattered,
Beautifully battered,
Smooth, not tattered,
Imagery splattered.

Friday Photo Fun is when I share a randomly captured moment,
or perhaps a photo experiment with more purposeful intent,
then pair it with a rhyming riddle to exercise your mind
and teach you more weird facts to which you once were blind.

After the answer is guessed, I will post a second, non-abstract photo...
and just in case you wanted to know,
the first is not a photoshopped version of the second -
they're shot using different techniques that to me beckon.

Jeff wins for three correct answers that weren't THE one
but which described the object as well.
I could've made you all guess more for my personal fun,
but the fact that it's a MOSAIC seems hard to tell.

Thursday Thoughts - The Evolution of Pranks

The Quip Prank Flow
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalimages.net

A TPed house,
Or good ding and dash,
Once brought giggles
To innocent lips -

A released mouse,
Or eggcellent bash,
Induced wiggles
In fingertips.

Now pretty things -
Pink flamingos
Or yarn wrapped trees -
are the cool 'rips'.

Now prankster rings
Invent fierce foes,
For celebrities -
Give SWAT Teams tips.

What will come next?
Ghost pranks by text?
Cars with new specs?
Furniture flips?

I miss the past.
This too won't last.
Change happens fast.
Let's hope for quips.

Tom Cruise and Chris Brown both got swatted recently -
a new childish prank that wastes government money.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Obnubilate

Obnubilate
(ob new bill ate)

by Rachel Hoyt

Is to annihilate
A view, with clouds so great
You feel trapped in a foggy state,
Road obscured, you wait.

Crushing cloud cover obnubilates.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Golden

Something Golden
by Rachel Hoyt

Not male or female,
Does not have a tail,
Peeks from up high
at the passers by...

Jeffrey persisted (via Facebook) all day long
and finally guessed one of the answers that wasn't wrong:

Cherub, Putto, Angel, or Cupid

Thursday Thoughts - Bank Executives' Salaries

The Wizard's Work
by Rachel Hoyt

image by luigi diamanti via freedigitalphotos.net

You see,
How it works is we
Do some magic math to show
That which our dreams already know -
We're fabulous and gaining ground,
Profits secure, salaries sound.

You're right,
There's been a slight
Trickle down delay in effect.
Our bonuses and stock shares reflect
All the same woes as those who wail
And our losses top the money scale.

You know,
Any One could go
Move to greener pastures for
That salary if you ignore
Their wizardly worth
For giving ideas girth.

Yeah sure,
We could conjure
A less selfish structure,
But the current culture would rupture.
Then how would jealousy motivate?
(Our potions for that aren't as great.)

Wacky Word Wednesday - Semordnilap

Semordnilap
by Rachel Hoyt

Palindromes back-
Words like pal and lap,
Or pan and nap,
Or par and rap,
Or pat and tap...
Each pair a semordnilap.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Powerful

Something Powerful
by Rachel Hoyt

Held the power to grant the right,
In the name of religion to fight -
A symbol of pride to grip tight,
For to lose it was a shameful sight.

Thursday Thoughts - On Old and New Treatments for Pain

The Dope Abides
by Rachel Hoyt

From chewing willow twigs,
To swallowing dark swigs of char-
Coal water, vinegar,
Down at the Huckster's Bar - a place
That nostrums often grace;
Wrapped raw onions to face held tight,
Rubbing alcohol, white
Soaked rag sops up the plight, the pain,
Until it burns again.
Pill popping starts up when, cocaine,
And opium gain blame
For addiction, the game they brought
Into our world and ought
To realize what they sought, we crave.
If they say, "Just be brave.
These currents can enslave your gland
To lend a helping hand."
We'll try the potion and... live with
The results - truth or myth -
Knowing the depth and width of mind,
The power that you'll find,
Is quietly resigned, inside -
The dope within abides.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Bafflegab

Bafflegab
(baf uhl gab)

by Rachel Hoyt

Bafflegab, to me,
Is the gibbly gobbly gwee,
Spoken eloquently,
Proclaimed officially,
By those who represent me,
Politically -
Their bafflegab flows free.

Thursday Thoughts - Filibusters in Congress

Filibuster Stew
by Rachel Hoyt

Hitler, Stalin, and Yertle the Turtle
were weak compared to the Wicked Witch Myrtle.
With powers sucked from her mom's crystal ball,
brewed by mixed blood and hatred towards all,
she cast her first and only curse
not to change her life but to make theirs worse.

The daughter of Philip "Buster" Locke
and a gypsy who on his door did knock
one night to ask to sit by the fire
with whom fate and grandpa did conspire
to lock down frivolity rights for all time
by conniving to churn life's lemons to limes.

Buster Senior had not been happy to see
his son defiling a lowly gypsy,
but he knew that their union would birth
a witch with powers of wicked worth -
Shunned by all as directed by him,
Myrtle's life grew quite lonely and grim.

Out in the forest, talking to weeds,
Myrtle met her grandpa, a man of few needs.
He tossed her a spell book and a leather pouch,
from high on a saddle as plush as a couch.
"Vengeance can be yours," was all that he said
before galloping towards dusk gleaming red.

He'd marked the page obviously with a wand,
because, at this time, Myrtle was a blonde.
The shiny staff begged her to flip the page and mix a brew
of something the spirits call Filibuster Stew.
With supplies provided she thought, "Why not?"
and, from the nearest house, Myrtle stole a pot.

Over bubbling tears, rain drops, silk, diamonds,
and currency from wealthy nations and islands,
Myrtle cast her wishes into the fog,
"Stubborn as cement, like bumps on a log -
Let them earn exile for their idle hands
which claim sole frivolity rights in the land."

With a fiery bang, Myrtle's hair turned dark black
and she knew that there would be no turning back.
The smoke from the cauldron blew across the town
and swirled around each lady in a gown.
Their children began to scold and be the frivolous -
ignorant of their isolation, they wax on sounding bibulous.

Do you think that filibusters in Congress are wise
or that failure to find compromise will be our demise?

Wacky Word Wednesday - Kludge

Kludge
(Klooj)

by Rachel Hoyt

Image by Idea Go via freedigitalphotos.net

With a kludge, you lose.
If you snooze,
Or you choose
To confuse
A fix with a ruse
And believe in a kludge,
Then you'll lose.
