Friday Fun Day - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés - After the Fire

Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

Thursday Thoughts - Walmart as a Corporate Example

The Corporate Concept
by Rachel Hoyt

Business is a basic model
near any mortal could master.
but corporations you must coddle,
plan actions like a wise pastor.

You must know how long it will take
to run others into the ground.
You must take in a big enough rake
to pay fines in gold, by the pound.

You must make jobs seem like the perk,
the lone, precious means to an end.
You must lie every day at work
and (maybe) backstab your best friend.

Keep costs down. Let net worth augment.
Hide profits in loopholes you find.
Keep the money people content.
(They are the thread that could unwind.)

When they find out why things are cheap
and demand quick reparations,
just pay the price and don't say bleep,
hope that ends investigations.

If they tell you to change your ways,
be kinder to those 'down below',
increase how much your buyers pay,
remind them just who runs the show.

If you played all of your cards right,
no one will challenge your brute force,
your children will live rich and light
of duty, doldrums, and remorse.

Walmart got a big slap on the wrist recently,
for some charges to which they (finally) plead guilty.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Antapology

Antapology
(an ta PO lo gy)

by Rachel Hoyt

is not an ant's apology
nor does it mean not sorry -
It's the reply to an apology,
sayings like, "Oh gee.
No need to cry for me."

That's an antapology.

Thursday Thoughts - An Allegory for Reporting, Journalism, and Spying

A Fly On The Wall Allegory
by Rachel Hoyt

image by idea go via freedigitalphotos.net

Fireflies flew out of his mouth
and sparkled around the room.
Lucid eyes stared vacantly south,
hunting for things to consume.
Soft glowing lights made the eyes see
the shelf of sad, empty jars.
Pots growing hands grabbed them quickly,
like they were precious rocks from Mars.
Empty glass jars soon became full
of blinking lights held in jail.
Hands of sass screwed lids tight - heave, pull -
**boom** just turtles in sparkling hail?

It's not safe to be a fly on the wall
or possibly to know secrets at all.

Thursday Thoughts - On Moving to Mars

Red Light, Red Planet
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Victor Habbick via freedigitalphotos.net

I will not pay five dollars for
a roll in your next show,
To leave my planet evermore -
You should beg me to go.

might help my health a bit,
For tat we know no tit.
Crater hopping sure does sound fun,
but dodging asteroids?
That space suit best be made to run
and locate nearby voids,
like the ones where your cameras
will be properly placed
to record gruesome last hurrahs
without being erased.

I'll save my dreams for the next flight,
planet, or galaxy -
The profit sharing seems not right,
I would rather stay free.

Thousands have applied to die on Mars.
Do you think it's because they want spaceships, not cars?

Wacky Word Wednesday - Discursive

Discursive
(dis kur siv)

by Rachel Hoyt

A story described as discursive,
Could be machine typed or in cursive,
It's plot line is defiantly dispersive,
Like a rambling tongue - discursive.

Thursday Thoughts - On Fashion and Style

Style Seeker
by Rachel Hoyt

Style takes more than exclusivity
of price, place, and proportions -
Just as your clothes don't desire me,
I reject their required contortions.

I prefer upcycled, vintage, handmade,
(things rarer than your rustic khakis)
uniqueness no eyes can evade,
sophisticated sparkle at ease.

The thin 'rich' kids can keep you,
I've got my imagination -
Some may stick to your styles like glue,
but I'll make, mix, and match my own creation.

but I think thinking that makes them special is a guise.

Someone steatopygous
has a rump worthy of a rumpus,
but it's rude to discuss
butts the size of a bus -
(shhh) steatopygous.

It was not one that I had previously heard.

Thursday Thoughts - Raw vs GMO Foods

Raw vs GMO Foods
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Maggie Smith via freedigitalphotos.com

Raw is raunchy,
untainted nature,
staunchly risky,
makes bodies azure -
the harm is in the handling,
and safety is quite costly,
on germs you're gambling,
and they cheat mostly.
It's just never pure
unless processed promptly -
Resist the allure.
Raw is raunchy.

Unharmed by herbicide?
Naturally, because herbs
can't cause a suicide -
it's only weeds they perturb.
Politically proven to be
not really that different,
yet unique and patent worthy -
basic biology, bent.
Still basically pure,
certainly not suicide -
Hear the allure?
Unharmed by herbicide?

although science can't justify either political drive.

Someone proudly percipient
Is an insight recipient,
Has wisdom not incipient,
And will ponder 'til omniscient -
The persistent percipient.
