Did You, Do You Play With Barbie Dolls?

Barbie
by Rachel Hoyt

Her lips can quip
a wiser voice
without a drip
of conscious choice.

Her hair can snare
a love for manes
with curves that dare
one to stay sane.

Her waist can waste
a young girls dreams,
trade in a trade
for frills and seams.

A new study says that playing with any Barbie
can limit the career choices a young girl sees.

A Double Limerick for Dowsers

The Dowser
by Rachel Hoyt

A farmer was pondering his crops,
wondering how much the drought would chop,
when appeared a man
with wands in both hands -
a drip who claimed he felt the drops.

The farmer refused to believe
the honesty of his blind weave
until his wand struck
a hydrant, by luck,
and he said, "Plant here - a tough sieve."

Working Long Hours Takes Years Off Your Life

110%
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Michal Marcol via freedigitalphotos.net

One hundred and ten percent
is not a wise investment -
One must keep a reserve,
some peace to calm their nerves.

One hundred and ten percent
costs days life had not yet lent -
One reaps a proper reward
by learning to save and hoard.

One hundred and ten percent
is a fair return on investment
but should never be paid for with life -
interest doubly correlates with strife.

This poem was inspired by new scientific evidence
that working too much does more than just make you tense.

The Brains of Humans and Dogs are Similar

Canine Cortex
by Rachel Hoyt

A vortex of sounds
daily trickle down
on man and man's best friend -
A cortex the grounds
where vibrations drown
and learn which needs to tend -
The vertex? A look,
proof each cortex shook
and needs his love to mend.
