Dream Train

We chug along, dreaming our dreams -
at least to some they're dreams it seems -
Dreams of not driving everywhere,
Dreams of a reasonable fare,
Dreams of a route from A to B
that's environmentally friendly,
Dreams of flight speeds without the height,
Dreams with not a single red light,
Dreams of feeling connected to
these pathways which can lead us through
to places we find and build dreams,
where dreams are life's supportive beams.

They say the high speed train is not a cause which should succeed.
I say it is a dream which oil kings wish to squash with greed.
I love trains, but I've rarely ever had the chance to ride on one.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall riding a train until I took my first trip to Europe (other than the L in Chicago & the BART in San Fran), but I take the train when visiting friends in LA and San Diego as often as I can. It takes a little longer than driving the same distance though, which is kind of lame, but it's better than driving in heavy traffic if you ask me. :P
DeleteRachel, we have the same problem over here--they keep saying it's a good idea and then they don't fund it. Another winner of a poem :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's so frustrating! We need better trains which encourage people to choose them over gas guzzling vehicles. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. :)
DeleteI always take the train for out of town travel ( to L.A., Portland, and even across the country a few times). I love it because it is a very relaxing way to travel and for the scenery. I also enjoy meeting people in the diner car. It's a time to read, sleep, stare out the window and think. I truly hope they don't put in high-speed trains because that would change to whole point of a train trip for me. Remember, life is about the journey, not the destination.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sad to hear since most people won't consider taking the train right now because it is too slow. I completely agree that the point of a train trip is to enjoy the journey, but think you can do all of that on a faster train. I suppose the scenery will be harder to take in, but I still think you can enjoy it.
DeleteJapan has high speed commuters all over the place. France has the TGV (tres grand vittesse). It is time we realize our forgotten potential and regain the efficiency of rail travel. It is time we caught up with the rest of the civilized world.
