Working Long Hours Takes Years Off Your Life

110%
by Rachel Hoyt

One hundred and ten percent
is not a wise investment -
One must keep a reserve,
some peace to calm their nerves.

One hundred and ten percent
costs days life had not yet lent -
One reaps a proper reward
by learning to save and hoard.

One hundred and ten percent
is a fair return on investment
but should never be paid for with life -
interest doubly correlates with strife.

that working too much does more than just make you tense.

  1. ha. its pretty funny to hear someone say they gave 110%
pretty soon you would have nothing left
    for anything else.

    1. I think we've been saying it so long we actually believe it is possible and proper. :o/

  3. At 110% I would have nothing left in the bank either--I am lucky if I get to 50%

    1. Those banks take as much as they can get, eh?

  4. Dollars and cents, not sense
    Test success.
    May this day be blessed
Check the account and forget the rest!

This 110% idea may apply loosely to citizens of the United States, but imagine the nightmare of being a factory floor wage slave in a foreign country being pushed to the limit to meet iPhone demand. People lured by false promises into a system of labor arbitrage built around ever increasing profits being ground into the floor just to be replaced by the next in line.

    1. I think many Americans are being asked to give far more than 110% too when you consider how little the minimum wage buys these days.

  5. Rachel, whoof. And the worst part is, no one appreciates it--if you give 110% they ask, "Why aren't you giving 120? Here's to a little sanity and balance--great poem! :-)

    1. Yep, they never think you're trying as hard as you are. You do a difficult job well and they just ask for more without saying thank you. Boo.

      Thanks for visiting!

  6. Perfect timing with this poem, I just had a performance review yesterday. 110% is not enough. Well I have to go now, time for work...
