Hexa-fornians

They say that we should cut up
My state, the land of gold -
They yearn for a pick-me-up,
A rule to be extolled -
They want safe towns and wise schools,
Smooth roads and sunny skies -
They're flush, funded by moguls,
And fueled by selfish cries -
They want to save a great state
By splitting it in six -
They're half trying a bit late
To create a quick fix.

Some are pushing for California to be split into six states,
possibly wishing such a split would make some lands seem even more great.
Sounds like a power grab. When San Francisco County was split into two, the southern part became San Mateo County, it was essentially a power grab by people who would benefit from a newly-formed county.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans want more power... NONSENSE that should be voted down!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you both. It's all about power and is unlikely to solve any of the issues our state government is battling with, especially the drought.
ReplyDeletei totally agree, power grab & a silly idea.... but i do think california, new york, Illinois and hawaii should succeed from the union and start their own country. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHaha. I'm curious what criteria you used to pick the states which should succeed and unite. :)
DeleteIt makes sense. We've gotten so large its hard to make good decisions that affect everyone in the State fairly. It allows for a lot more local decision making. It gives our region more identity and purpose because our needs are far different than those of the Central Valley. It does grab power away from the San Francisco/Sacramento politicians who ignore us, and gives power and representation to Southern California, which is such an important economic engine for the whole country.
ReplyDeleteAnd if this theory for economic improvement were extrapolated to the whole country, what would that look like?
Deletenever happen. first, congress would have to approve giving ca 10 more senators - who would likely be dems. give them a filibuster-proof majority. lots of problems.
ReplyDeleteAccording to the article I linked to, the first hurdle is getting the state legislature to sign off on it despite the likely detrimental financial effects it would have on certain counties. Then we would face the even bigger hurdle - congress.
DeleteA split would put power closer to local people, while the whole current trend of the Obama groupies is away from local empowerment, and toward central planning and control in Big Government. Therefore the split measure will fail.
ReplyDeleteIf at first you don't succeed, try, then try again? I'm not rooting for that really, but I believe you should root for what you believe is best, regardless of its chances at success.
DeleteGerrymandering. While California should have more Senators than other states with less people, like South Dakota, because we have 40 times the citizens, splitting up the state did not come from a grassroots effort, it came from a Venture Capital named Tim Draper. Not sure if the 1.3 million signatures he submitted are legit, but no one I talked to wants to split up our great state except political gerrymanderers for their own agenda.
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't see many proponents emphasizing how it could help everyone. Most of the supporters like to use the pronoun "us" as if saying it will help someone besides themselves makes the wish less selfish.
