A Pantoum Poem for NaPoWriMo on Poker, Betting... and Life?

All Bets Are Crazy
by Rachel Hoyt

The choices are call, raise, or fold.
All hold two cards before the flop.
There's no un-crazy bet, I'm told.
Even with odds, you could catch slop.

They're just two cards before the flop,
But, burn-turn, your hand could be flush.
What are the odds you will catch slop?
Who says you're feeling a false rush?

Burn-turn, has your hand fallen flush?
Did chance choose to shower down strength?
Who says you're feeling a false rush?
Perhaps presence surpasses length.

If chance won't choose to bring you strength,
Bluffing may be your safest bet.
Sometimes presence surpasses length.
Be brave and take what you can get.

Bluffing may be your safest bet.
The choices are call, raise, or fold.
Be brave and take what you can get.
There's no un-crazy bet, I'm told.

The Forty Hour Work Week Powers The Economy

Economy Loop
by Rachel Hoyt

If you designed your life,
You would want to work less,
From that we'd all feel strife,
Progress would be a mess,

If you got to work less,
You might not spend so much,
Progress would be a mess,
Indulgence not your crutch,

If you don't spend as much,
Your joys won't be the same,
Indulgence not your crutch,
Balance in life your game,

Your joys won't be the same,
With time you might seek health,
Balance in life your game,
Your gain would slash all wealth,

With time you might seek health,
Or actually read a book,
Your gain would slash all wealth,
Your self-control the crook,

If you rest or read books,
All lives would feel more strife,
Self-control is the crook,
So we designed your life.

A Pantoum Poem Inspired by Detroit's Bankruptcy

Debt Reckoning
by Rachel Hoyt

Later has become now.
Debt dominoes are falling.
"I can't," must become, "How?"
"I won't," just sounds appalling.

Debt dominoes are falling.
Where will the pattern stop?
"It won't," sounds so appalling.
Why must all the dominoes drop?

Where will the pattern stop?
We could be saved by a gap.
Must all of the dominoes drop?
We may have built our own trap.

We could be saved by a gap.
We must pull out some dominoes.
We may have built our own trap.
Not thinking of tomorrow shows.

We must pull out some dominoes.
"I can't," must become, "How?"
Not thinking of tomorrow shows.
Later has become now.

I can't help but wonder who seeks solvency?
