Could We Learn to Coexist with Wildfires?

When they named me Smokey,

Do you think they knew?

Did they set that spark free

To shift blame to you?

What if mitigation

Is just a nice myth?

What if propagation

Is every thing's pith?

Word around the forest

Is that you don't know -

Flames don't die, they just rest

While smoke steals the show.

(Some researchers at UCSB inspired me

to wonder what Smokey would say if he could see

the results of their wildfire study.)

When Loving Your Job is Like Joining a Cult

It's all for one - a single goal:

endear our product to your soul.

We found it was love at first sight.

We know that you'll see we were right.

We sometimes work from dusk to dawn

(if you count camp outs on the lawn).

We love rare beats and ethnic foods

and how emoji boost our moods.

We hate to wear our shoes indoors

(and thus also hate cold tile floors).

We banned memos, don't use voicemail,

and have greeters who wag their tails.

A family, we grow as one -

each bullets in a loaded gun.

Some say the "best" way to build a small business

is to act like a cult leader and embrace prejudice.

There's no need to study -

Just pray and repeat.

The wavelengths are steady,

Listen to the beat.

You'll feel in your bones that

You now know it all,

Once ritual's rat-a-tat

Breaks down your heart's wall.

Apparently most of us know much less than we think

about religions other than the one whose wisdom we choose to drink.

Why Do We Believe What We Believe?

Believe Me

We believe the thoughts that fit

and discard the thoughts that break,

See the world as we see it -

Facts exist just for facts' sake.

Change must come from deep within,

Where we're often short of wealth -

Love yourself and you'll begin

to lay the track to true self-health.

Recent research shows how hard it is to change what we believe,

even when all of the "facts" were admittedly spread just to deceive.

Once upon a time

Nothing changed on a dime

Because we couldn't hear

Or see the things not near.

We hardly knew the way

Others lived day to day

And rarely saw a view

Our shoes could not walk to.

Then one day, like a dream,

There came a way to beam

Data through outer space

To a digital place.

We knew not how it flew

Or burrowed its way to

Our screens, but we embraced

Sharing this neutral space.

Now he who plugged us in

Wants bribes or he will thin

Our vision, slow the speed,

Infuse neutral with greed.

We know that he will hide

The voices that abide

In cracks quite hard to find

And control poor great minds.

UPS Saves Millions Per Year By Avoiding Left Turns

Right Wrong Turn

If you missed that left turn,

There's no need to stop stern,

Blocking and locking up traffic -

Life will move more slick

If you go straight, then right,

And right at the next two lights...

Assuming you must go that way,

Don't find joy while astray...

For sometimes on the long way we learn,

Good can come from making wrong turns.

UPS saves millions by avoiding left turns.

Could this truth extrapolate to life lessons one learns?

of conscious choice.

Her hair can snare

a love for manes

with curves that dare

one to stay sane.

Her waist can waste

a young girls dreams,

trade in a trade

for frills and seams.

A new study says that playing with any Barbie

can limit the career choices a young girl sees.

where vibrations drown

The vertex? A look,

proof each cortex shook

Animals Acting on Reality TV

Wishful Seeing

Reality is what you see

away from your TV -

your personal monotony

that's mostly drama free -

No friends from Old Mac Donald's farm

wandering down Main Street,

No ostriches with sneaky charm

who could peck off your feet,

No six foot long constrictor snakes

hiding in your drain pipe,

No mysterious squeaks or quakes

that could be heard on Skype,

No toucans or parrots that talk

knocking upon your door,

No chimpanzees out on a walk

to the new corner store,

And even if these did occur

you probably could not snap

an action shot without some blur

unless you set a trap.

Reality TV with humans has never been my cup of tea.

Capturing creatures to act in such shows makes me beyond angry.

They're minding your rhyme.

They detect, they inspect

your bold disrespect.

In a snap, with your rap,

You lay your own trap.

It's free speech. You can preach,

but any can leech.

Some police are cracking crimes with the messages in rappers' rhymes.

You would want to work less,

From that we'd all feel strife,

Progress would be a mess,

If you got to work less,

You might not spend so much,

Progress would be a mess,

Indulgence not your crutch,

If you don't spend as much,

Your joys won't be the same,

Indulgence not your crutch,

Balance in life your game,

Your joys won't be the same,

With time you might seek health,

Balance in life your game,

Your gain would slash all wealth,

With time you might seek health,

Or actually read a book,

Your gain would slash all wealth,

Your self-control the crook,

If you rest or read books,

All lives would feel more strife,

Self-control is the crook,

So we designed your life.

It seems that the 8 hour work day's real profit

stems from keeping us weak and our fire to spend lit.

that want to float,

find the surface

jump the moat -

Skipping and twirls

mix up the mind,

reveal new purpose,

help truth unwind -

Fantasizing

of quandaries and quests

builds bravery

for future tests -

Wandering, surmising,

one wonders anew,

sails somewhere savory,

where wishes break through.

Science shows daydreams and video games

build courage, inspire ideas and change.

Bubble Life

When you're inside looking out,

They don't hear you when you shout.

Opaque walls trap every sound,

From soaking into the ground.

Thoughts bounce around gaining strength,

Hoping to fly to great lengths.

When it pops and all falls down,

Spills into life's cracks and frowns,

Sounds begin to tap on ears,

Thoughts wig out and jump off piers,

The bubble ceases to be,

But that which it'd trapped lives to roam free.

I read of the "first female Massai warrior"

and wondered what the Massai gals thought of her.

Just what's yours, all yours,

No less and no more.

It was not much of a surprise to me

to read that the sharing economy

is butting heads with democracy.

What if our loved ones live somewhere abroad?

What if our online friends are a bit odd?

What if our feet like jumping the big blue?

What if our eyes delight in culture too?

What if we work in the margins and cracks?

What if we live by the skin on our backs?

What if we asked for your help that one time?

What if we were falsely framed for a crime?

What if you know we have dreams to spark change?

What if you see us protest something strange?

What if you see a weird rant or ramble?

What if you know that we like to gamble?

When and why do you watch? What do you see?

And why would you take an interest in me?

Knowing how much data the government easily plunders

can certainly make one wonder whose watch they are under.
