Thursday Thoughts - Recycling TVs and Other Technology

Terry Tout and the Garbage Spout
by Rachel Hoyt

Terry Tubert Timothy Tout
Learned young to take his garbage out.
He knew how to pick pieces off,
How to spew prices as he coughed,
The men to sluff the best parts to,
And what they'd cost if there were few.
He kept his piles from piling up.
He bought fine whiskey for his cup.
He watched the piles go in and out.
Terry Tubert Timothy Tout
Got rich off a garbage spout -
But then the spout would not turn off
And the fumes made his workers cough,
No people prized the parts he picked,
Profits vanished as trash grew thick.
So Terry Tout fled the scene too,
Mad from watching as trash piles grew,
Afraid tech trash will chase him down -
It took his job, why not his town?

Thursday Thoughts - Sweden Wants to Buy Your Trash

Recycling the Reign
by Rachel Hoyt

Poor Mafia. Now Sweden is "the boss" -
The new lion in the trash tree of life,
Gobbling garbage, brewing energy sauce.

In a land where recycling is too rife
They use trash to provide a basic need,
Now the lack of trash is their only strife.

On others' overabundance they feed,
Assisting others but mostly themselves,
Though they agree the time will come to cede.

Still, who's to say that a man with good elves
Could not put a stop to their genius plan?
(Someone with very few books on their shelves.)

The Swede rising shows what you think, you can -
When ideas are on fire, put them near a fan.

This terza rima poem was inspired by the news that Sweden
is importing trash to burn to warm their people's dens.

Stopping Satellite Showers

The sky is spewing satellites down upon the earth.
Once they land, far fewer parts will have value or worth.
Plus, allowing them to just come flying, crashing down,
brings much fear upon my heart and to my face a frown.

to save us money while recycling all the space junk that they can.
They plan to launch one big craft loaded with several smaller pods
which they'll dispatch to scavenge for valuable satellite rods.

I fear our worsening whirling, swirling atmosphere of debris.
I'd love to let a remote controlled vessel brave this danger for me.
I do hope said vessel is prepared to be watched like a hawk
to ensure that all it does is reconfigure used antennae stock.

I learned from the story of Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout
that you should always, always, always take the garbage out.
If we continue to let our satellite junk accumulate,
satellite showers will be our destiny and death by trash our fate.

To survive we'd have to find the place Sarah Stout's neighbors hid,
while ignoring a simple lesson learned long ago as an innocent kid.
We need not (yet) fear getting crushed by a tower of rancid spoiled food,
but we may get stabbed by satellite parts as proof that ditching trash is rude.

Trash is Now Treasure

Looking around, I see signs that we've taken to heart
the fact that all trash contains treasure, at least in part.
The economy has beat us down.  We're scraping pennies;
gathering recycling 'round town to buy the bare necessities.

Nearly everyone seems do be doing it in some way,
trying to find a way to recoup a cut in pay.
Some steal copper from empty homes and buildings,
while others use metal detectors to hunt for schillings.

Many people don't appreciate this scavengering.
In fact, they find the intrusion a bit maddening.
Honestly some people truly are crossing the line,
doing things that could incur more than a fine.

Some invent miracles just to earn a quick buck
and, like others, are probably down on their luck,
but it's not the same as hosting too many yard sales
and those too get busted up by uniformed males.

So what are we to do in this unique time of need?
Will you find creative ways to do a good deed?
Perhaps stash the cash producing bottles and cans
somewhere they will easily reach the right hands.

Maybe they will finally make a reality TV show
about the sketchy places that scavengers go,
a new collectibles hunter seller style
that's likely to stick around for a while.

I wish we could find a way to root out all tricksters,
to motivate others to behave like do-good-ing hipsters,
but we'll probably have to settle for commercialized charity
because true smile causing goodness (these days) is a rarity.
