A Love Sonnet for Valentine's Day

Love Sonnet
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalphotos.net

I feel it pounding all day long - da dum.
Somehow, a new beat beats upon my drum.
I wish I knew the words, could hum the tune.
I swear, when you last blinked, I heard a strum.
I long to sing the song and ride the boon.
I finally want to learn to play the spoon.

This beat could lead us to a place of beauty.
This beat might be the sound of sacred booty.

Come tell me that your beat has shifted too.
Come show me you know when the song began.
Come hold me until one beat forms from two.
Come listen with me and cement a plan.

Together we can write our special song -
the masterpiece meant for us all along.

Uxorious

A man who is uxorious,
Makes his gal's life luxurious -
Always doting, never furious,
That's the essence of uxorious.

Every week I rhyme and define a new wacky word.
Come on over to indulge your inner nerd.
And, please let me know of any weird words you've heard.

YTT - Happy V-Day from the Three Wives of Newt

Newt's Loot

It's fun to remember that Newt
Has made three gals say, "Aw, shoot.
I'd love to marry you.
Yes, that rock will do...
so long as it's not some saved loot."

Thursday Thoughts: Valentine's Day is Just Days Away

A Purrfect Valentine's Day

I've been single for many a Valentine's Day
and still find it a hard time to know what to say
when the question starts to echo in my brain,
that horrible one that can drive a gal insane,
"Why aren't you dating anyone?
What happened with that last one?"

This incessant brain chatter inevitably leads
to a see if anything online could fulfill my needs.
I'm told the options are constantly expanding
to keep up with what the public is demanding.
I peeked early this year at what's new and exciting,
but didn't really find anything intriguing or inviting.

in case I see any handsome foreign men all alone,
but learning to say "I like you" in four languages,
is proving harder than driving while making sandwiches.
I can do Spanish because I learned it years ago,
but learning a third, fourth and fifth?  I don't know.

which I bet lots of Icelanders are searching tonight
to make sure that cute girl or guy they just met
isn't a familial relation that could cause regret.
(The same families have bred on that island for years.
This digital genealogy tree should help prevent our fears.)

Yet, my favorite thing I learned wasn't really about dating.
In fact, it could in a way prevent some future mating.
You see, I learned my cat's purr has super healing power,
and since she likes to cuddle with me hour after hour,
I'm now not quite so sad to spend V-Day with her,
because who hasn't once wished their Valentine could purr!

A Letter to Saint Valentine

Image by Filomena Scalise via freedigitalphto.net.

Dearly departed Saint Valentine,

I've been thinking of writing to you for quite some time
because your holiday really makes me want to whine.
No matter if I'm single or happily coupled up
this holiday always feels pretty dang screwed up.
Did you really need or want your own special day?
If not, the dude who sprung it on you should have to pay.

Doesn't it bother you that few write a real love note?
I hate those cheesy kid cards with pictures and quote.
I hate that only kids give them to every damsel and bloke.
I hate that a card of said type was the last one that I wrote.

Do you like the store displays that pop up right after Christmas?
I hate that many Americans think it's just plain good business.
I hate that everywhere I look I see red and pink and grimace.
I hate that if it upsets me I need pink medicine for my sickness.

I hate that once I was asked to celebrate by doing our laundry.
I hate that making dinner reservations always turns into a quandary.
I hate that not wearing red, pink and hearts is looked at so wrongly.
I hate that bars that night are packed with preying male osprey.

I hate that everything costs more for that one silly night.
I hate that red roses and chocolate are now considered trite.
I hate that many women want a gift that sparkles under light.
I hate that many men feel they never quite get it quite right.

I hate that saying, "Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus."
Shouldn't the man's home planet be the one that rhymes with penis?
(Pardon my frank language. My mouth sure isn't the cleanest.)
I've digressed. Excuse me again. Please let me leave you with this.
If I'd gotten you one of those cards it would say, "You're the keenest!"
It would be filled with candy hearts labeled cutest and sweetest.

Just in case all this makes you a little queasy in the tummy,
I've enclosed some Pepto chew tabs and a bit of extra money.
Thanks for reading. I sure feel better from venting to you a while.

Sincerely,
Your friend,
Rhyme Me a Smile
