Friday Fun Day - Unexpected Smiles

Small Pleasures
by Rachel Hoyt

Sometimes a cute little note
that someone you don't know wrote
that is worded wittily neat
can brighten your day
in the most special way
because it is most unexpected
when small pleasures aren't neglected.

Two Years of Rhymes = Lots of Good Times

Highlights from Year Two for You
by Rachel Hoyt

Happy Blogoversary to me!
It's time to start year three!!!
Did you enjoy year number two?
I've cherished every comment from you.
They help me to carry on
waking up each day at dawn
to search for fun stories to share
with a bit of added rhyming flare.

To celebrate, I will list this year's Top 10
poems that you might want to read (again?):

#8 - Mickle

I also published some fun poems about tea
and would like to thank Tea Magazine for supporting me.

Lastly, if you haven't yet, visit Clickety Clack, We Talk Back,
where I rhyme online comments into a word snack,
as a new columnist who riffs on those talking smack.

The Coat Trick... with dogs

You remember sticking your skinny arms in coat sleeves
while your friend's head sat atop a man with four knees?
I enjoyed playing that game to trick others as a child.
You might say it was a young version of girls gone wild.
This video is proof some adults are still silly as juveniles.
I enjoyed watching their hilarious dog meal time styles.

Newly Discovered STDs

I've recently contracted an STD...
that's a Sexy and Talented Diploma, silly.
It leeches onto you when least expected;
demands to show itself, to be projected.
Simultaneously awarding you for creativity
then demanding you spread it, let the world see.
Though the title of this post sounds "heavy",
Earth's gravitational pull is holding steady.
All is well 'cuz this really isn't a disease,
which is why I'm also giving these blogs STDs:

I hope you'll take this STD and spread it far and wide.
Below are the rules by which we're asked to abide.

Thank you Raising Amelie for giving me this STD.
Thank you Adventures in Estrogen for inventing this silly
award for all to see.

-------------------------------------------------------

1. Make up ONE totally ridiculous story about yourself that is a complete rip-off from a movie. It can be as long or short as you want; clean or crass as you want.  (Who noticed mine? Anyone?)

2. Pass it on to whomever you feel is deserving of this STD – or accept it and keep it for yourself; it’s your blog – it’s your choice.

3. If you choose to accept this STD, please link your acceptance post back to Adventures in Estrogen and to the person who gave you your STD (in your case it would be me… Rhyme me a Smile) You get the idea?

You can choose to keep your STD for yourself. Yet if you choose to pass your STD around, do it fervently and don’t forget to back link.

4.Use the acronym “STD” as much as possible within you post (send SEO’s into a tale spin)

Smile for your health!

Before I go to bed on an ordinary lazy Friday night,
I thought I'd rhyme y'all a Saturday morning delight.
I'm smiling now and already feel a bit stronger!
Children smile up to 400 times per day!
We should imitate their happy smiley way.

An Awards Thank You Long Overdue

I've been a bit lax on posting thanks for some awards,
but wish now to show they strummed my heart string chords.
I did have them all listed on a separate shiny page,
but blogger glitched and deleted it all when I said save.
Thankfully I had already made myself a little paper list.
If I didn't at least have that I would really be pissed!
You see, you all have really flattered me too much
and my memory has trouble with names and such.
So, finally, here's my long overdue THANK YOU.
Each of you have blogs I truly enjoy reading too.

Lolamouse, your LOL award was incredibly sweet!
I enjoy both your blogs. The range of writing is neat.

Bryan, I look forward to seeing your new blog's style.
The receipt of your stylish award gave me a big smile.

Mary, I thank you for seconding Bryan's nomination.
FYI: The deja vu version brought just as much elation.

I doubt I'll ever forget the day my bloggy friend Doug said,
"Your Blog Doesn't Suck" and Be More Gay should be read.

I also got two awesome awards for my fine versatility
from Louise's World of Art and another poet friend, A.B.

Most of the above awards were accepted on the condition
that I reveal a few things about my history and disposition.

So, I've decided to finally follow this rule too.
Here's some silly random facts about me, for you!

(1) In high school I "lettered" in badminton and choir;
not exactly the activities that boost popularity higher.

(2) I rarely start the day without drinking coffee...
to avoid that caffeine headache which is really nasty!

(3) I am a participant in the pastime known as hashing.
I find the exercise adventure fulfilling and relaxing.

(4) As far as formal education goes, I'm poetically untrained.
One day grandma's rhyme gene kicked in. Now it can't be restrained.

(5) I sing in the shower a little but in the car even more.
For me, karaoke is not a drunken party chore.

(6) I have a fraternal twin and our middle names rhyme.
Don't think mom knew she'd birthed a rhymer at the time.

(7) I love to cook, but often eat chips, salsa and cheese for dinner.
When time is short, for me, that meal is a frequent winner.

So, there you go... seven fun facts about me.
Now who to pass these on to, let me see...

The Stylish Blogger and Versatile Blogger awards above,
are hereby given in tandem to the following blogs, with love.

To Bubba, for inventing a new poem form, the Frost on a whim.

To Pamanner's Blog for her poem Pitch which deserves more than a skim.

To this Limerick Called Life for "When the scissors come home to roost."

To The Fickle Forgettery for giving me what her page stats deserve: a boost.

To Tao of Anxiety for teaching great ways to maintain your smile.

To AZFree, who sadly, hasn't been on line in a little while.

To the bald man whose ranting rambles are smart and funny.

To Patricia Lynn - hope you find a publisher that wants to show u da money!

That's my rule breaking for the day: two awards each instead of one
and just maybe I'll hand out the others some future day... just for fun.
Thanks again for all the awards!  Your encouragement means a lot.
At the moment I feel like I've been hugged by every fan I've got!

A Letter to Saint Valentine

Image by Filomena Scalise via freedigitalphto.net.

Dearly departed Saint Valentine,

I've been thinking of writing to you for quite some time
because your holiday really makes me want to whine.
No matter if I'm single or happily coupled up
this holiday always feels pretty dang screwed up.
Did you really need or want your own special day?
If not, the dude who sprung it on you should have to pay.

Doesn't it bother you that few write a real love note?
I hate those cheesy kid cards with pictures and quote.
I hate that only kids give them to every damsel and bloke.
I hate that a card of said type was the last one that I wrote.

Do you like the store displays that pop up right after Christmas?
I hate that many Americans think it's just plain good business.
I hate that everywhere I look I see red and pink and grimace.
I hate that if it upsets me I need pink medicine for my sickness.

I hate that once I was asked to celebrate by doing our laundry.
I hate that making dinner reservations always turns into a quandary.
I hate that not wearing red, pink and hearts is looked at so wrongly.
I hate that bars that night are packed with preying male osprey.

I hate that everything costs more for that one silly night.
I hate that red roses and chocolate are now considered trite.
I hate that many women want a gift that sparkles under light.
I hate that many men feel they never quite get it quite right.

I hate that saying, "Men are from Mars. Women are from Venus."
Shouldn't the man's home planet be the one that rhymes with penis?
(Pardon my frank language. My mouth sure isn't the cleanest.)
I've digressed. Excuse me again. Please let me leave you with this.
If I'd gotten you one of those cards it would say, "You're the keenest!"
It would be filled with candy hearts labeled cutest and sweetest.

Just in case all this makes you a little queasy in the tummy,
I've enclosed some Pepto chew tabs and a bit of extra money.
Thanks for reading. I sure feel better from venting to you a while.

Sincerely,
Your friend,
Rhyme Me a Smile

Stop Licking the Drain!!!

Image by Salvatore Vuono via freedigitalphoto.net

My cat has one bad habit which drives me insane.
She won't stop licking our disgustingly gross drain.
As she sips slurps, the shower drips drops on her fur.
I think it gets her high 'cuz it sure makes her purr.

I wondered if other animals were as strange.
Then a drunk German owl my perspective did change.
They locked him up in the German slammer one night
'cuz he thought getting hammered on schnapps was alright.

Later on I learned something even more crazy:
an alligator swallowed a cell phone... oopsie daisy.
No doubt she thought food had been thrown in her water
but a ringing, aching tummy was all that chomp got her.

Tempted again, the owl and alligator would
probably still indulge as quickly as they could.
I tried to cut my cat off once - she went insane.
Hairballs and nausea couldn't beat licking the drain.

It's like those times when you open mouth insert foot.
Fancy words can make your reputation caput.
Other times it can catapult you towards famous.
Take Sarah Palin - frequent tweeter most shameless.

Being outrageous in "public" is addictive too
but it can result in horrible press for you..
If you're not careful, you'll believe some tweeting gals
who say extremism makes you millions of pals.

So the next time you're tempted to spill some verbal junk,
remember what usually happens to you next, punk.
You'll only get sick licking that figurative drain
and it's high time you learned to stop causing yourself pain.

Spreading Smiles

Image used courtesy of Stuff No One Told Me.  Thank you Alex!

Statistics by blogger has slipped me a hint for a rhyme topic.
Responding to their stats kinda makes me feel philanthropic.
It seems a few have found me when seeking "a rhyme about smiles".
Lucky for me, my blog title led them straight to my poetry files.
Evidently, I'm not the only adult who misses reading Dr. Seuss,
or who feels that smiling at silly rhymes should need no excuse.

Smiling often, for some, is not so easy to put into practice.
For them, grinning though depression feels like sitting on a cactus.
In situations where surrounded by "just put on a happy face" devotees,
Lethargic they feel - as if judged by jury of plastered on smile zombies.
Everyone has a happy place somewhere... at least that's what I think.
Smiling is contagious... so if you're not doing it, your friends stink!

Singers have been writing songs about this activity for years.
Many comedy shows are written with the goal of joyful tears.
I bet if you sit out in public, people watching for five minutes.
Lots of reasons to smile will appear in the form of life snippets.
Everywhere you go there are plentiful fun life scenes to see.
Sitting on your couch... there's TV, movies, and bloggers like me.

Stuff No One Told Me is a great comic blog whose point of view I find nice.
At the Duchesne, fun news is presented with a sprinkle of blog writer spice.
I think the "life narrative" I've followed longest is Kristine's Wait in the Van.
Confessions of a Recovering Cynic is super fun... check it out if you can.
Awesome stick figures and wacky semantics abound at Doug's I Like Cheese.
Scott's Tip of the Day is entertaining.  That bloggy lawyer is the bee's knees.

Since my smile needs vary I also keep an arsenal of funny movies handy.
Many days I find new smile themed music as joyful as a bowl of candy.
I try to rotate through each smile type to befit my daily personal style.
Those around me evoke new grins and smirks every once in a while.
Engaging your friends in random acts of craziness can also be good...
So long as the wacky behavior isn't out of control or misunderstood.

Simply put, there's a million reasons we ought to grin no matter what.
My friends, I'm grinning now despite a huge dark purple bruise on my butt.
You see, I had a little spill the other day getting off the ladder from my loft.
In a test of grace moment, the cabinet corner smashed my butt so soft.
Even though I hurt in nearly every standing or sitting position possible,
Smiling is a sacred daily practice I find (drug assisted) is still  plausible.

So... get out there today and find the thing that makes you smile the most.
My hope is you'll take time to go visit the links I shared within this post.
If you need "help", you could surgically inhibit frown ability with botox.
Whatever it takes to smile throughout life's school of hard knocks?
Everyone likes to take stress breaks for a funny joke or video.
So please share a smile today with someone special you know.

Greenzilla's Top 5 Green Deeds

Last night I formed a new life goal in my sleep.
Greenzo and I were performing environmental upkeep.
I was watching the show 30 Rock before bed...
I guess his message got stuck in my head.
All I know is that I now feel possessed.
I must save this world with which we were blessed.
In my dream I was a hero known publicly as Greenzilla -
who's top five green deeds save more than a scintilla.

5. I bum rides from friends as often as possible,
using auto trouble stories whenever it's plausible.
The broken down car thing works on my coworkers too.
They'll wake up early for a downtrodden member of the crew.

4. No matter where I am, if there's a thermostat,
I have to check the level to see what it's set at.
If I can get my hands on one that's set irresponsibly,
I reset it to stop it from shamelessly taunting me.

3. When I find a good deal on fluorescent light bulbs,
I buy a bunch to take to friends houses and night clubs.
I change out four to five light bulbs every time I go out,
in hopes no one notices the swap until they burn out.

2. A few times a year, if I can locate a good place,
I plant a baby tree in it's "native" open space.
The long night of digging is my best workout plan yet!
Risking a brush with the law... that I'll never regret.

1. Did you know that cows release methane when they fart?
Stopping this grotesque pollution would be more than a start.
Scientists say garlic is the key to lowering the level 50 to 90%.
I say dropping garlic in cow water troughs is money well spent!

So far Greenzilla has existed only in my dreams,
but the need for a change is more imminent than it seems.
And so, I now pledge to make Greenzilla's life a reality,
in hopes to have an effect on the American mentality.
If you too have ideas on how to make a difference,
please post them here to show your non-ignorance.
To additionally help me spread the word amongst the gluttons,
click the share via facebook, twitter or stumble upon buttons.
