Eat It Up
by Rachel Hoyt
The shelves are stocked against you
with profit packed flavors -
trademarked tastes of the sweet life
you've limited time to savor.
Just one bite? No, that won't do.
Who would eat all the rest?
It was bottled and boxed to cure your strife,
cooked up just for you, the guests.

Trying to be/get/stay healthy is no piece of cake:
Something my husband and me wonder about a lot: How food and cooking could become so unhealthy. And home cooking isn't that difficult really :-). Thanks for this great poem
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the poem! It's sad to me how many people hate cooking their own food. It really isn't as tough as we think. :-)
DeleteFunny enough my last poem as of this writing, is kind of about my struggle with food and getting healthy but using different imagery.
ReplyDeleteThe temptation of the sweet
The attraction of the fried
I feel the shadow of defeat
To stay away I try
Good luck with your food battle! Thanks for visiting and commenting. :))
DeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy how much our food is manipulated. Fortunately, I do enjoy cooking. Excellent poem!
Thanks! I'm glad you like the poem and that you like to cook. :)
DeleteSo true. I could/would eat healthy if it were simple and easy. But eating health is work, eating healthy is expensive, eating healthy is not convenient. Why is it something good for you is more often than not hard, difficult and challenging?
ReplyDeleteWell... I agree that eating healthy isn't easy, but I do think it's easier than capitalist entrepreneurs would like us to believe. Making the choice to get healthy certainly sounds easier than accepting the consequences of poor health to me.
DeleteAlong with music, food has been my life long paramour. Great poem.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good fight! Nice to see you here again. :)
