Friday Photo Fun - Something Sun Loving

Something Sun Loving
by Rachel Hoyt

Lives life in hopes of touching the sun,
but is satisfied with twelve or less feet of fun.
A single stem beauty composed of many blooms.
Full of the nectar its lover, the bee, consumes.

Friday Photo Fun is when I share a randomly captured moment,
or perhaps a photo experiment with more purposeful intent,
then pair it with a rhyming riddle to exercise your mind
and teach you more weird facts to which you once were blind.
After the answer is guessed, I will post a second, non-abstract photo...
and just in case you wanted to know,
the first is not a photoshopped version of the second -
they're shot using different techniques that to me beckon

Bryan was able to guess right away
that Sunflowers were the abstractified object of the day.

Thursday Thoughts - Knights and Chivalry

I wish I could give you a kiss on the cheek - a peck.
At a time when single gals everywhere wonder
if their dreams for a knight in shining armor have gone asunder,
alone you ride as a symbol of our dreams,
stitching our hopes together at the seams.

What will you do when your quest is complete?
I know you'll still behave chivalrous and sweet,
but will you get a so called 'real job'
or become the world's latest heart throb?
You could keep riding and test my nation's hospitality
but I'm not sure that the U.S. would be as kind to thee.

Your first challenge would be sharing the road
Next you would have to find a place with a yard
where your horse could rest (which could be hard).
The homeless shelters don't allow animals to stay
and most homeowners don't have barns where he could lay.

I understand if you don't want to gallop on down
and will try not to change my smile to a frown.
You are certainly doing your share to show you care
if the world is kind, compassionate and fair.
The ingenuitive scrappers here are more selfish
and yet they too are praised for what they accomplish.

May your quest remain noble and many copy your style!

Sincerely,

Rachel Hoyt

Wacky Word Wednesday - Augury

Augury
by Rachel Hoyt

An augury
is a sign you see
that might make you feel tingly.

It's an omen of what's to be
if you believe the world shows thee
through the occasional augury.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Selfish

Something Selfish
by Rachel Hoyt

A seemingly innocent act,
to which you shouldn't overreact,
but which could cause one innocent life
quite a bit of undeserved strife.

is fun for humans but can harm bark quite badly.

Thursday Thoughts - Vending Machines and Robot Domination

Dear vending machine inventors and clever ad agencies,

Think about what you are doing to the world with your work, please.
It seems the new trend is to engage the customer with the machine,
but exploiting love for junk food at this level seems plain mean.
There's the one in Singapore that gives out a free Coke for a hug,
or the traveling machine that spits out free chips when you cut the rug,
three machines which treat humanity like we're all dumb as rocks.

While there are the many who live life happily ignorant
of the psychological effects for which such advertising is meant,
I, for one, know that you will benefit long after that day
when the long hidden happy memories come into play.
When feeling blue, they may look back upon the joy
they found interacting with your junk food dispensing toy
and reach for that same snack to help soothe their pain
only to experience undesired weight gain.

I know what you'll say. "Watch the videos.  They love it!"
I am familiar with your tactic, but wish you were above it.
At the very least could you post some nutritional info?
The calories burned while earning the treat could also show?
You stand to gain much by getting the people to play your game,
so spread honest facts now before you are the ones they blame
for their vast lack of happiness and plethora of fat cells -
the obvious result of your machine's powerful spells.

May your robots be kind and spread joy in style!

Sincerely,

Rachel Hoyt

Wacky Word Wednesday - Effete

Effete
by Rachel Hoyt

Something effete
is no longer neat,
hip, cool, or sweet.

Like an over used rap beat,
outdated things are efftete.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Colorful

Something Colorful
by Rachel Hoyt

The inventor of this thing created 5,000 types of glass
and paid his male employees equal to each lass.
He charged a hefty sum to those who liked his work
but paid enough to artisans to not get called a jerk.

Thursday Thoughts - Foie Gras, California and Food Bans

Dear Foie Gras lovers of California,

You've probably heard, but I thought I'd warn ya,
that duck lovers (like me) have gotten their way.
Foie Gras isn't legal now, or so they say.
The law is ambiguous (such a surprise)
and restaurant enforcement mostly involves angry eyes,
where the owner claims that he does his ducks no harm.

His boast made me imagine a dream like place
where ducks got drunk and stuffed their face,
then lounged around or enjoyed a float
on a pond which never saw the likes of a boat.
I imagined corn cakes deep fried in lard
which the ducks tasted timidly, then fell for hard.
Once they had washed down that corn cake with a beer,
they knew the new tastes American ducks held dear.

Sadly, the gluttonous gorge fest I dreamt of for the ducks
wasn't the reality any farmer had created with his bucks.
You say that the science is lacking to prove the practice cruel?
I've never eaten Foie Gras and won't consider it unless you
can say the ducks in question were happy and prove it true.
Since my rational self knows the overindulged are never truly happy,
good luck proving to me that purposely fattened ducks found real glee!

May your livers stay lean and food choices gain style!

Sincerely,

Rachel Hoyt

Wacky Word Wednesday - Fugacious

Fugacious
by Rachel Hoyt

When you buy something that is fugacious
there's no need to feel trepidacious.
At least you won't need a place that's more spacious
since these types of things tend tease us -
bring beauty and then leave us.
Fleeting things are fugacious.

Friday Photo Fun - Something Wooden

Something Wooden
by Rachel Hoyt

A pastime that has been around for centuries,
requiring skills not found in fingers, toes or knees.
A way to keep your brain power un-molded.
The very best at this do it blindfolded.

Thursday Thoughts - Bethel, Alaska and Taco Bell

Dear residents of Bethel, Alaska,

Did you enjoy your Doritos Locos Tacos bonanza?
Would writing the joy you tasted fill a line or a stanza?
I felt much empathy for you when I heard
you'd been told 'The Bell' was coming by some nerd
who only meant to prank a single 'friend'
and gained a full town of bruised egos to mend.

It was quite nice of Taco Bell to throw a party
to keep your cravings for their food hearty,
but what did you think of their latest invention?
(I haven't yet tried it and have no intention.
Despite a deep love for Taco Bell food,
that flavor combo looks quite crummy and crude.)

Was that wacky snacky worth being part of a promo
for a fast food joint to which you still cannot go?
To me, the trade off there seems a bit loco.
What about the normal tacos, nachos and burritos?
Chalupas, gorditas, enchiladas and enchirritos?
For the love of beans! (Por el amor de frijolitos!)

I'm sorry to point out, perhaps before you realized,
that this kind act may one day make your list of most despised.
You could try to raise funds through kickstarter or an imitator,
to try to taste more fast food sooner rather than later.
Surely someone there must think that it is franchise ownership time.

I hope Taco Bell cravings don't drive Bethel loco!
Do let me know your thoughts on the Doritos taco.

Here's hoping you'll soon be eating American style!

Sincerely,

Rachel Hoyt

Wacky Word Wednesday - Puckish

Puckish

act out most every wish
and always have stories to dish
'cuz they're mischevious little fish,
those whimsical creatures - the puckish.
