A Pantoum Poem Inspired by Detroit's Bankruptcy

Debt Reckoning
by Rachel Hoyt

Later has become now.
Debt dominoes are falling.
"I can't," must become, "How?"
"I won't," just sounds appalling.

Debt dominoes are falling.
Where will the pattern stop?
"It won't," sounds so appalling.
Why must all the dominoes drop?

Where will the pattern stop?
We could be saved by a gap.
Must all of the dominoes drop?
We may have built our own trap.

We could be saved by a gap.
We must pull out some dominoes.
We may have built our own trap.
Not thinking of tomorrow shows.

We must pull out some dominoes.
"I can't," must become, "How?"
Not thinking of tomorrow shows.
Later has become now.

  1. we can only hope the pattern does not continue around the US, you know...could get rather messy...not thinking of tomorrow...scary huh?

  2. Love the rhymes here. And so true.

I'll reply with these words: (But why these words exactly)?
    Do you know?

In the glow of the night
Cant you see what you are doing to me?
Cant you see what you have done?

As I try to pass another long and sleepless night,
A hundred crazy voices call my name,
As I try to pass them by,
I almost can believe that she is here,
Here in the glow of the night.

    Lonely people, empty rooms,
    Pointless violence, silent tombs.
Could it be that we shall be together again?

Will the nightmare soon give way to dreaming
That she is here with me?
Here in the glow of the night.

    In silence and darkness
We held each other near that night
We prayed it would last forever.

    Blood on the windows
Millions of ordinary people are there
    They gaze at the scenery
They act as if it is perfectly clear
Take a look at the mountains
Take a look at the beautiful river of blood.

Do you know what you have done?
Do you know what youve begun?

    In silence and darkness
    Hold each other near tonight
    For will it last forever?
Will it last forever - forever...

Do you know, do you know, do you know what you have done?
Do you see what you've begun?
    'cos there's nothing, nothing, nothing
There's nothing you can do, there's nothing you can do
Do you see, do you see what you have done?
    - Genesis

    1. I really enjoyed these words, but feel I'm missing something. I can't decide who/what the subject is... the world? The economy? Nature?

    2. Rachel, the clue is where the words are from.
      - Genesis.
Let's just say there is slight correlation between my words and your words. But they have nothing in common.

      I love puzzles. :)

    3. I understood the Genesis clue, but still have no clue. Perhaps I have been away from church too long...

    4. It's the band 'Genesis'. They are song lyrics. The song is called "Domino".

    1. Thank you! I definitely thought the pantoum was the most appropriate poetry form for the subject. :)

Rhyming or not, I would like a lot to hear the thoughts my words brought...
