Banned Bits

Please take them from me.
I cannot resist
The savory flavors,
That sweet death wish twist.

It stings like a bee
But I'm glad they're still buzzing.
I worried the rumors
Were true - truth was fuzzing.

Generally safe
So long as you're too smart
To let manufactured
Lies infest your heart.

No tub gut or waif
Needs them to survive -
Their fates are secured
By the road truth drives.

The FDA has at long last noticed
that hydrogenated oils should be kicked off the GRAS list.

    1. Well... I laughed at NYC trying to ban large drinks, but I am very excited at the prospect of the FDA banning hydrogenated oils and actually requiring food additives to be proven safe before using instead of the lenient methods being used now where they essentially use the market and years of consuming to determine how safe their "generally safe" products are.

  2. Hi Rachel! It's been awhile since I've been by, but I thought I would get back into the swing of writing and reading again!

This was good news to see, too bad it's not a more common occurrence with regulatory agencies. The FDA always seems to be going one direction then the other with these kinds of things. For example, they approve hundreds of damaging chemicals to be used in cigarettes at the same time they run ad campaigns meant to reduce the number of people choosing to smoke.

Round and round we go, I suppose.

    1. Good to see you back, M. James! It is a bummer the regulatory agencies don't seem to watch out for us that well. It's not that I want them to think for the citizens, but certain things just shouldn't exist. I think they get away with tobacco because it's been around since the beginning of time almost. There's no need for them to let people invent a million new chemicals to kill us with... things that don't grow naturally.

  3. Hands clapping loudly over here!! Thank you for this--I've been banging the drum against trans fats for several years--really ticked me off that they could say "zero trans fats" when there was .5 gram in it--grrrr. One of the first researchers that found trans fats were harmful thought "hmmm maybe they're not too bad," gave some to mice who were trained to run a maze and their ability to run the maze was so reduced that when she came home she threw out everything that had trans fats in it...Great news! :-)

    1. Exactly! Even if you tried to avoid trans fats they could be hiding due to labeling requirements. Grrrr... :) Thanks for stopping by!
