Thursday Thoughts - Paper, Pens and Handwriting

My fellow humans of the modern world,

When was the last time your fingers were curled
around a pen through which your thoughts were hurled
onto a blank piece of paper or a greeting card?
Was the sensation odd? Were the finger movements hard?

Do your pads of paper look like antiques?
Were you worried that your pen's ink may have gone dry?
If you got a paper cut would it make you cry?

If you fear that your handwriting
is becoming less and less inviting,
braving such fears is the only way
to get your actual writing skills to stay.

You never know when you will need the ability
to scrawl a quick note without technology.
Perhaps there will be a vast power outage
or you'll be stranded somewhere on the edge.

No fancy cell phone cover can help your phone swim the sea
if you are trapped on an island, hungry and lonely,
but a neatly scrawled S.O.S. in the sand
might attract a kind helping hand.

So be careful passing too many days
without practicing the ancient ways
You'll need it some day.  Don't ask me when.

Do you want to be average or send messages with style?

What's your choice?

Does getting cards in the mail make you smile?
Why not get one from me once in a while?

  1. Rachel, I hand-write anything that I can. It just seems more personal than something generated off of my computer. Unfortunately, I can't always write a lot because my carpel tunnel screams at me. I am also a sticky-note person...everywhere! I don't know what I would do without them LOL. Probably go through a lot of 'tape' haha.

  2. Just sent a card with a hand-written note inside to my nephew yesterday. However, it seems true letter writing is a dying art form. And, I always compose my posts on the computer.
Great poem and food for thought, Rachel!

  3. I used to scribble notes on the back of little slips of paper, but lately I've been using the memo feature on my phone.

    1. Awwwww, caving in to technology eh? I'll admit, I use both paper and technology. :)

  4. I have to admit that writing has really taken a backseat. The other day I had to hand write an application and I actually had to do some wrist exercises after I finished. It was shameful! I promised to write something everyday but then everyday I think I am saving paper and feel better :) Loved your post!

    1. Well, if you still have the urge to use paper... remind yourself that it takes a lot of energy to power the servers that store all of that information. We could grow more trees. :)

  5. I still like to write with a pen, every now and then :) (though to be truthful my handwriting is pretty awful). Plus I'm a lefty so the ink always smudges :/

  6. This inspired me to take time and search through this dust covered file cabinet where I had filed my old pencil scrolled notes and ideas, little ditties, profound world changing verses that would make Shakespeare proud or Shelley ponder with romantic notions. Found wire rung notebooks from early inspirations and classic styled pretentious poetry of my youthful creations.

Believe it or not (love this cliche because it gives one a choice), I still love saving old eraser pencils, #2's and different types of pens. They still feel wonderful my fore, index and thumb wrapped around them with a piece of paper at the ready. I was like Ed Norton from the Jackie Gleason show 'the Honeymooners' where Ed would sit down to write something and would sit with pencil at hand swiping the paper with the back of his hand over and over never starting which would frustrate Ralph (Jackie Gleason's character) causing him, Ralph, to shout at Norm, 'WILL YA' !!!!!

See how this piece inspired me, Rachel?

  7. Just yesterday I began an exercise of writing two pages every morning in a notebook - you won't believe how cathartic it is, Rach. The words just seem to flow and they seem to come from deep within. I felt like I had come 'home' ♥

  8. Dear Rachel,
I love writing. I hand-write all my poems. It's my poor Assistant who has to type them all. I have a stack of about 300 and counting waiting for her! I haven't progressed to think and type - probably never will. My wife says I have a fetish for fancy pens...she's right of course! I love the feel of a pen in my hand. Nothing beats sending a hand-written note or receiving one in return. I'm always writing my wife notes and letters. It's so romantic. Sadly, I fear the art of writing is being lost amongst texting fingers...something I don't think I will ever master. LOL
    Nice post. Thanks for sharing.
