The Inconvenient Timing of Eureka Moments

Lost Poem
by Rachel Hoyt

image by MR LIGHTMAN via freedigitalphotos.net

Missing: one poem in rhyme,
Last seen Wednesday around nine.
Two lines in the shower came,
Then dribbled right down the drain;
Three feelings blew through at noon,
Then skipped off to hop the moon;
Four signs on my commute shone,
Then went dark as sunset moaned;
Five rhymes chimed in a bird's song,
Then were hushed by a ding-dong;
Six words sparkled in my eyes,
Then went mute like stealthy spies.
The lines vanished before my pen,
Somewhere between now and when.

Poetry Prompt - Crambo aka Bouts Rimés

In honor of National Poetry Writing Month, I'm bringing back a Friday tradition.  Bouts Rimés means "rhymed ends" in French and is a game or challenge where one person (me) makes a list of rhymed words and others (you) write the lines that end with those rhymes, in the same order in which they were given. It was known as Crambo in English and was quite popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Will you help me bring back this hip historical habit?

Wacky Word Wednesday - Dern

Dern
by Rachel Hoyt

To learn someone's dern,
First trust must be earned,
Then dark secrets are learned,
Which may lead you to yearn,
To un-know what you learned,
Return secrets earned,
Regain mystery, the dern.

Every week I rhyme and define a new wacky word.
Come on over to indulge your inner nerd.
And, please let me know of any weird words you've heard.

I'm sorry for the lack of notice, but I've decided to quit
posting wacky word rhymes here for a bit.
I'm pondering compiling these (and more) poetic definitions
into one of my very first book submissions.

Wacky Word Wednesday - Cantrip

Cantrip
(can trip)

by Rachel Hoyt

image by idea go via freedigitalphotos.net

can trip you,
trick you,
put you under a spell,
and silence your yell.

It's magic used tragically,
slick witchy trickery -
like the apple Snow White nipped,
that one bite slip,
a deadly cantrip.

Orotund

Sounds that are orotund,
Are most certainly not moribund,
Nor will they leave you stunned,
They're full and rich - orotund.

A man who is uxorious,
Makes his gal's life luxurious -
Always doting, never furious,
That's the essence of uxorious.

Thursday Thoughts - The Evolution of Pranks

The Quip Prank Flow
by Rachel Hoyt

image by Stuart Miles via freedigitalimages.net

A TPed house,
Or good ding and dash,
Once brought giggles
To innocent lips -

A released mouse,
Or eggcellent bash,
Induced wiggles
In fingertips.

Now pretty things -
Pink flamingos
Or yarn wrapped trees -
are the cool 'rips'.

Now prankster rings
Invent fierce foes,
For celebrities -
Give SWAT Teams tips.

What will come next?
Ghost pranks by text?
Cars with new specs?
Furniture flips?

I miss the past.
This too won't last.
Change happens fast.
Let's hope for quips.
