Thursday Thoughts - On Moving to Mars

Red Light, Red Planet

I will not pay five dollars for
a roll in your next show,
To leave my planet evermore -
You should beg me to go.

might help my health a bit,
For tat we know no tit.
Crater hopping sure does sound fun,
but dodging asteroids?
That space suit best be made to run
and locate nearby voids,
like the ones where your cameras
will be properly placed
to record gruesome last hurrahs
without being erased.

I'll save my dreams for the next flight,
planet, or galaxy -
The profit sharing seems not right,
I would rather stay free.

Thousands have applied to die on Mars.
Do you think it's because they want spaceships, not cars?

Bacteria Face

This week the White House responded to our petition
where we demanded public recognition
of any knowledge of life other life forms,
space land happenings beyond the norm,
but, not surprisingly, they said they know nothing.
Most of us don't believe they haven't seen a thing.

We keep discovering new planets and stars
and soon we're shipping some germs to Mars.
Is it really possible we haven't seen
any aliens anywhere, be they not green?
Are they trying to create little martian men
by flinging bits of ourselves into space now and then?

It wasn't long after the White House announcement
that I heard about where the germs will be sent.
I wonder if they planned it all in one meeting?
Do they ever indulge wacky thoughts that are fleeting?
"Hey guys.  After we tell the people there's no life in outer space,
want to launch some bacteria and see if it turns into a face?"

Stopping Satellite Showers

The sky is spewing satellites down upon the earth.
Once they land, far fewer parts will have value or worth.
Plus, allowing them to just come flying, crashing down,
brings much fear upon my heart and to my face a frown.

to save us money while recycling all the space junk that they can.
They plan to launch one big craft loaded with several smaller pods
which they'll dispatch to scavenge for valuable satellite rods.

I fear our worsening whirling, swirling atmosphere of debris.
I'd love to let a remote controlled vessel brave this danger for me.
I do hope said vessel is prepared to be watched like a hawk
to ensure that all it does is reconfigure used antennae stock.

I learned from the story of Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout
that you should always, always, always take the garbage out.
If we continue to let our satellite junk accumulate,
satellite showers will be our destiny and death by trash our fate.

To survive we'd have to find the place Sarah Stout's neighbors hid,
while ignoring a simple lesson learned long ago as an innocent kid.
We need not (yet) fear getting crushed by a tower of rancid spoiled food,
but we may get stabbed by satellite parts as proof that ditching trash is rude.

Reach for the Sublime

It's hard to believe NASA's final flight is in orbit
without starting to feel at least a teeny bit morbid.
Of course, the end of any era means the start of a new one
and perhaps future exploration will be even more fun!

Sure, no one else will ever be the first to pee in space
but perhaps someone will build a space vacation place.
Hopefully we will never again get lost on the moon
and someday they'll turn Al and Ed's story into a cartoon.

If ever again an incident involves spacecraft and lightning,
I hope it's a Back to the Future thing and not something frightening.
Though NASA's desire to power up solar didn't work at first,
perhaps they just needed to channel a lightning burst?

The technology we've been using is over thirty years old.
I'm glad we're taking the step to do something more bold.
Though it's fun to reminisce on everything we've seen and done.
Weird creatures shouldn't be the only ones to join the in-flight fun.

If we want ordinary people to someday have the opportunity
to experience the things that now only astronauts get to see,
we will need a vessel at least as modern as a cell phone,
not one from the time when shuttles symbolized "on roam".

It seems only fitting we would share spacecraft for a while,
with the country that helped invent out-of-this-world-style.
Previously a competitor, now our partner in crime.
Together we must now reach toward the sublime.

One Share of Moon Robot

There is a very special and unique construction project brewing,
the magnitude of which, gave me many thoughts for chewing.
Apparently the Japanese are leaping closer to fulfilling their plan
to pump solar energy from the moon to every man and woman.

The idea was actually first proposed in 1968.
I guess you could say I'm learning about it a bit late.
I'm jealous of the robot builders and those who will control them
and sad that one day we'll speak of how the moon looked "back when..."

On the plus side, we will have plenty of green energy,
but I worry a disco ball moon would blinding for me.
If it makes the sky sparkle like a raver's dance party,
I'll need eye protection that is much more hearty.

I hope they're also planning a visitor center and resort
where the rich can come to relax, explore and cavort.
Many have dreamed of going there for years and years.
If our need for power impedes that, there will be many tears.

If all this happens, I'll just have more things to be jealous of.
I doubt I'll ever have the money to fly to the moon with my love.
Perhaps I'll invest in the company and pretend I own a robot.
Living vicariously through him could be the best chance I've got.
